Co-Edition vs Licensing: Which Publishing Model Is Right for Your Market?

Co-Edition or Licensing? Understanding the Difference
When a publisher wants to bring a children's book to a new international market, one of the first strategic decisions is how the book should be produced. Should the publisher license the rights and organise production locally, or join a co-edition and benefit from shared production? According to Flintas Publishing's experience, both models can work well. The right choice depends on the type of book, expected print run, production complexity, target price, market size and the level of control the local publisher wants to have.
What Is a Licensing Deal?
In a licensing agreement, a publisher acquires the right to publish a title in a specific territory and/or language. The local publisher normally takes responsibility for translating the book, preparing the local edition, organising printing and distributing the finished product.
Licensing agreements can define territory and language, format and edition, licence period, print run, advance payment, royalty terms, and distribution rights.
Licensing can be particularly attractive when a publisher has strong local production capabilities, expects a substantial print run or needs significant local adaptation.
What Is a Co-Edition?
A co-edition is a publishing and production model in which several language or market editions are produced together or through a coordinated production process. The original publisher typically coordinates production, while each partner prepares the language version for its market.
Co-editions are especially suitable for highly illustrated children's books, picture books, board books and titles with more complex production features such as flaps, die-cuts or special finishes.
By combining orders from several markets, publishers can achieve a larger overall print run and potentially reduce the unit production cost.
Questions to Ask Before Choosing a Model
- What is my realistic expected print run?
- What retail price does my market support?
- How complex is the book to manufacture?
- Do I have a reliable local printing partner?
- How much production control do I need?
- Does the book require local adaptation?
- How quickly do I want to launch the title?
- How much inventory risk am I prepared to take?
- Would a combined international print run improve the economics?
- How Does the Co-Edition Process Work?
- Select the title and discuss market suitability.
- Agree on territory, language, quantity and commercial terms.
- Prepare the translation and local-language text.
- Finalise files and production specifications.
- Coordinate printing and quality control.
- Arrange delivery to the local market.
- Launch and distribute the book locally.
There Is No One-Size-Fits-All Answer. The best choice starts with understanding your market, your expected volume, and the production requirements of the title.
